Assignments Requiring Students to Locate a Particular Article through Leatherby Libraries

We get a number of reference inquiries from students asking how to locate specific articles assigned to them through Leatherby Libraries. We are happy to help them use our Journal Finder tool to locate such articles that are available in full text through the library’s online databases.

Below are the directions we provide students, which you are welcome to incorporate into your assignments or pass along directly to your students. Please feel free to adjust these instructions as necessary for your specific purposes and know that I am available to help you draft instructions involving library research strategies.

As always, the librarians at Leatherby are very happy to work with your students on an individual basis. I just wanted to take this opportunity to share some search tips that may apply to the research assignments your students are conducting.

Directions for Locating Specific Articles (Using the Library’s Journal Finder Tool):

Use the Journal Finder search tool located on the Leatherby Libraries homepage to locate specific articles and to find out if the library subscribes to a particular periodical ((journal, magazine, newspaper, trade publication, etc.). Please follow the steps below to use the Journal Finder:

1. Begin at the Leatherby Libraries homepage, www.chapman.edu/library, and locate the Journal Finder search box in the center of the page.

2. In the Journal Finder search box type the title of the journal or periodical (e.g., Harvard Business Review) where the article you are looking for is published. Note: Do not type the title of the article into this search box. You first need to find out if the library subscribes to the particular journal or periodical where the article you are trying to access is published.

3. Click Search.

4. The next page will tell you if full text articles from the journal are available through one or more of the library’s online databases.

5. Note the date range of availability listed next to each database.

6. Click on the link for one of the databases with coverage that corresponds with the publication date of the article you want to access.

7. Log into the database with your Brandman username and password (the same you use to log into Blackboard).

8. Once inside the database, look for an option to search within the journal or periodical.

9. Enter the title of the article into the search box provided (exclude any punctuation marks or special characters that can throw off the search engine).

10. Click the Search button or hit ENTER on your computer keyboard.

11. Click the PDF or another full text linking option provided (e.g., “Check for Full Text” or “HTML”).

12. Once you access the full text of the article, save it to your computer. You may also decide to print a copy of the article or email it to yourself.

NOTE: If the Library does not provide access to the article, you may order the article through Interlibrary Loan using your ILLiad account. If you have not registered for an ILLiad account, please visit http://www1.chapman.edu/library/centers/borrowing.html for more information. In rare cases, a journal may only be available in print (indicated by “Chapman University Print Holdings”). In this case, you can request a physical copy of the article be mailed to your home by filling out an article request through your ILLiad borrowing account.

Gearing Up for the Winter Term

As we ring in the new year and embark on the Winter term, your librarians invite you to take part in the library and research support services available to BU students, faculty, and staff:

Individual Research:
Please know that your librarians Annie Knight (aknight@chapman.edu) and Wenling Tseng (tseng@chapman.edu) are here to help you locate research materials, evaluate information, and navigate the Leatherby Libraries system.

Library Instruction:

Faculty, as we move into the Winter term, you may be planning to have your students complete a research assignment. If this is the case, please know that you can request a library research workshop for your class that can be conducted for blended and online courses. Library instruction aims to improve the quality of research done by students and introduces them to resources beyond what is found with basic Google searching.

Library instruction sessions are taught by librarians Annie Knight and Wenling Tseng and are designed to cater to your specific research assignment. Information literacy skills taught during these workshops may include the following, depending on the research specifications of your assignment:

· Locating scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed journal articles, using the library’s online databases

· Locating primary sources (teaching also the difference between primary and secondary sources)

· Developing research topics and defining keywords for effective searching

· Using the Leatherby Libraries to check out books, videos, and more via mail from our physical collection

· Evaluating sources

· Conducting advanced search strategies to locate legitimate online sources, such as government documents, statistics, and reports

· Locating company information using the library’s different business databases

· APA citation

If you have not tried it out already, be sure to check out the Discover search platform, which cross-searches the library’s catalog holdings (including the books, e-books, and videos in our collection) and the majority of the databases we subscribe to (for accessing full-text journal articles online, including peer-reviewed). The Brandman University Library and Research Guide (Brandman LibGuide) serves as a basic how-to for conducting your library research and navigating Leatherby Libraries. The contents include links to tutorials on finding books, articles, and journals, information on borrowing from the Library, Interlibrary Loan, avoiding plagiarism, and evaluating websites. In an effort to assess the effectiveness of using this research tool, we have launched an online survey!

Announcing the new “Information Literacy Standards for Teacher Education”

The new "Information Literacy Standards for Teacher Education" was created by Association of College & Research Libraries' Education & Behavioral Sciences Section Instruction for Educators Committee. As stated in the document, the Standards are intended to direct faculty and librarians in developing information literacy instruction for teacher education students. Faculty and librarians can utilize these outcomes in the process of evaluating and assessing such instruction.

The Standards are listed below:

Standard One -- The information literate teacher education student defines and articulates the need for information and selects strategies and tools to find that information.

Standard Two -- The information literate teacher education student locates and selects information based on its appropriateness to the specific information need and the developmental needs of the student.

Standard Three -- The information literate teacher education student organizes and analyzes the information in the context of specific information needs and the developmental appropriateness for the audience.

Standard Four -- The information literate teacher education student synthesizes, processes, and presents the information in a way that is appropriate for the purpose for which information is needed.

Standard Five -- The information literate teacher education student evaluates discrete pieces of information as well as the entire information seeking process.

Standard Six -- The information literate teacher education student knows how to ethically use and disseminate information.

Human Trafficking Awareness Day at Leatherby Libraries

Human Trafficking Awareness Day at Leatherby Libraries

In observance of April as National Child-Abuse Awareness Month, Leatherby Libraries will host “Human Trafficking Awareness Day” at the Library on Tuesday, April 12th from 4pm - 6:30pm, in the Henley Reading Room (2nd Floor).

Chapman Law Professor Marisa Cianciarulo, Neda Sargordon, Attorney at law, and Mrs. Cheryl Pittluck of the Orange County Task Force will be speaking on a host of issues pertaining to human trafficking. Please see speaker bios below for more information.

All Chapman community members and the public are invited to this free event that is intended to raise awareness and encourage action in the following ways:

Address human trafficking occurring at local and global levels
Share information on initiatives being taken within the academic community and beyond
Encourage and support social justice clubs on campus and the Chapman student body at large in their efforts to help in the fight against human trafficking
Remind the community that human trafficking is not isolated to other countries or even other states; it is happening in their own vicinity
Educate the Chapman community and our families so they know where to turn if they suspect human trafficking taking place in their area or with someone they come into contact
Discuss how to protect our youth and the potential next generation of Chapman students

Speaker Bios:

Cheryl Pittluck
Cheryl Pittluck is a native of Southern California and a graduate of California State University Fullerton. Although she lived in New York for 13 years, she has been back here in California for 12 years. Cheryl first got involved with the issue of Human Trafficking through the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force. She works with the Task Force on outreach, education and in assisting human trafficking victims/survivors here in Orange County. Cheryl is also on the national leadership of the Vineyard Anti-Slavery Team (VAST) for the Vineyard USA denomination, and on the Board for the Global Center for Women and Justice at Vanguard University in Southern California.

Professor Marisa S. Cianciarulo
Professor Marisa S. Cianciarulo is a specialist in clinical teaching and immigration law with a human rights focus. She is the Director of Chapman’s Family Violence Clinic, which she launched in 2007. Professor Cianciarulo taught in the Villanova Clinic for Asylum, Refugee and Emigrant Services for three years prior to joining the faculty at Chapman. She previously served as a Staff Attorney with the American Bar Association’s Commission on Immigration in Washington, D.C., was a partner in a law firm specializing in immigration matters, and served as interim legal director of a non-profit immigration services provider in Arlington, Virginia. Professor Cianciarulo received her B.A. from the Catholic University of America, her Juris Doctor from American University Washington College of Law, and her M.A. from American University School of International Service. She teaches the Family Violence Clinic, Civil Procedure, Gender & the Law and Refugee Law. She publishes on the intersection of gender and immigration with an emphasis on vulnerable immigrant populations.

Neda Sargordan
Neda Sargordan joined the law school faculty in fall 2010 as a Visiting Clinical Instructor and Staff Attorney with the Family Violence Clinic. Ms. Sargordan provides direct legal representation in the field of immigration to victims of human trafficking, persecution, domestic violence, and other serious crimes. Ms. Sargordan also provides supervision and mentorship to second and third-year law school students enrolled in the Clinic. Prior to joining Chapman University School of Law, Ms. Sargordan was an associate attorney at a large mass torts and employment class action law firm in Los Angeles and a Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellow at the Public Law Center in Santa Ana. Ms. Sargordan received her J.D. from Chapman University School of Law and her B.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles.

ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Source - Medcom Video Collection
Online nurse training videos from Medcom, Inc. These videos can be cross-searched within ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source. With over 300 clips and loading, Medcom, Inc. video clips cover assessment, procedure, prevention, and other nursing topics. Videos are available in Flash format and can be downloaded for future reference. Clips appear in chaptered form and are indexed with metadata.
Counseling and Therapy in Video
An online collection of streaming video available for the study of social work, psychotherapy, psychology, and psychiatric counseling. Includes counseling sessions, demonstrations, consultations, lectures, presentations, and interviews.

These video collections are available to currently enrolled and/or employed Brandman patrons.

New Borrowing Process

Leatherby Libraries has streamlined its borrowing process for Brandman patrons. Now, all article, book, and audio/visual requests can be made through your ILLiad account, whether the item is owned by Leatherby Libraries or must be obtained from another library via Interlibrary Loan.

We are no longer using the online Book and Video Request Form or Article Request Form. Through this new borrowing system, books and audio/visual materials will still be mailed to you.

To request an article, book, or audio/visual item for checkout, you will now login to your ILLiad account. If you do not currently have an ILLiad account, you must create one. To create an ILLiad account, please visit http://www1.chapman.edu/library/centers/borrowing.html.

Faculty, if I have created a library research guide for your class, please let me know if you need assistance updating the borrowing information it may contain.

ILLiad has many benefits and features, including your ability to:

Create your own personal account
Enter your personal information only once (instead of every time with the old request forms)
View the status of your requests by logging into your account
Cancel and/or resubmit requests
Check your request history

New Electronic Life Sciences Colloquia Available Online via Leatherby Libraries

Leatherby Libraries now subscribes to the Colloquium Digital Series of Life Sciences! You have 24/7 online access to these resources (please see the "To Access Online" instructions below). Colloquium Digital Library, Collection One comprises colloquia covering cell and molecular biology and biomedicine, including the neurosciences. Written by a prominent contributor to the field, each colloquium is 50 – 100 pages in length, and each synthesizes an important research or development topic, providing book-length treatments (about 100 pages) on topical subjects. Series in this collection include Developmental Biology and Biotechnology (description source: http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/COU/resource/10952).

To Access Online:
1. Go to the Leatherby Libraries homepage, www.chapman.edu/library
2. Look to the bottom of the page in the "Databases (search for articles)" section
3. Select "Title" from the "Search Databases by ...' dropdown menu
4. At the page titled "Electronic Resources," you will find an alphabetical listing of all the databases subscribed to by the library with a "Connect" link underneath
5. Scroll down to "Colloquium Digital LIbrary of Life Sciences - Morgan & Claypool Publishers" and click "Connect"
6. Enter your Brandman/Chapman username and password (the same as your Blackboard login)
7. Begin your search. Note: Check the default search settings (e.g., Authors and Lecture title). Set your search to "All" if you wish to do a full text search through the various colloquia on your topic.

This week the SAILS information literacy survey was launched for all LBSU 300 sessions. Finally, a friendly reminder to faculty to contact me at aknight@chapman.edu to schedule library instruction for their classes. Library instruction teaches students about conducting academic research and the Leatherby Libraries system. Library instruction is course specific and designed to meet the unique research needs of each class. There are still openings for the Spring 1 session, and I am also taking reservations for Spring II. Library instruction can take place via Polycom, Wimba, or Skype (if your campus has Skype installed).

Submit Your Book and Video Requests by December 3 for the Fall II Session

Please note that the last day for Brandman students to submit a Book/Video request for the Fall II session is this Friday, December 3rd. The Library will continue to accept article requests until the end of the term.
